Eugene “Gene” Maffei Sr., 82 years old, passed away at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center on Sunday, February 27, 2022. He was a resident of Wilkes-Barre. Gene Maffei was born on March 18th, 1939 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to parents Louis and Ruth Maffei. He was a member of the Class of 1956 at GAR Memorial High School, where he received his diploma. After meeting the one and only Dawn Sallitt in Public Square at midnight, he proposed to her, and they went on to tie the knot. On February 16 of this year, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He was the pleased proprietor of both the Hess Gas Station and the Astro Car Wash.
Gene’s time in the workforce came to an end with the Luzerne County Parks department after he had spent the previous 18 years working for the Wilkes-Barre Area School District. He had prior military experience and had been in the Army Reserves. Gene’s parents, Louis and Ruth Maffei, as well as his in-laws, Moses and Marie Sallitt, his nephew, Louis Maffei, and his son-in-law, Michael Brostoski, all passed away before him.
Gene is survived by his devoted wife, Dawn Maffei; his brother, Lou, and his wife, Margo; his daughter Dawn and her fiance, John Blechschmidt; his daughter Tonia and her husband, Gregory Barrouk; his son, Eugene Jr. and his wife, Kathleen Maffei; his grandchildren Danielle and husband, Michael O’Donovan; Nicholas and wife, Alexandra Potter; Julian and Ryan Maffei; Elise, Ava, and Aiden Fellerman;
Gene was a loyal husband, father, brother, grandpa, and great-grandfather. He also had a deep love for his great-grandchildren. His family was the source of the greatest pride and happiness in his life. He never missed a school or sporting event that one of his grandchildren was involved in. He always looked forward to going on hunting trips with his best friend, Bob Anstett. The Dallas Cowboys and the Penn State football teams, NASCAR, and several shows on the Discovery channel were some of his favorite things to watch while he dined on his wife’s home-cooked meals and a slice of pie from Dymonds Bakery. In particular, he enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys.
