Monsignor Joseph G. Riedman, who was 93 years old at the time of his death, passed away in a tranquil and peaceful manner at his home in Connersville on the evening of Friday, March 4, 2022. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing. Connersville, Indiana was the place where he made his entrance into the world on February 20, 1929. This was “the darkest phase of the depression.” He was born in the family’s home.
He was the seventh child born to Joseph J. and Mary K. (Ratz) Riedman, who collectively gave birth to a total of eight children during the course of their marriage. Because his real name is “Joseph Junior Riedman,” which is recorded in all of his official birth papers, he is commonly referred to as “JJ.” This nickname was given to him by his family. During his baptism, the priest insisted that the name “Junior” should not be used because it is not a name and should not be used.
As a result, his father proposed that they adopt the name George, which had previously been used by his maternal grandfather. Because of this, throughout his entire life, people have referred to him by a wide range of different names. He started his academic education in 1935, when he was enrolled in the first grade at St. Gabriel School in Connersville, and he never missed a day of school during those first eight years of his study. The year 1935 marked the beginning of his formal education. In 1943, he became a student at Connersville Public High School, where he remained as a student until the year 1947, when he received his diploma.
