Richard Martin Death, Obituary – Richard Edwin Martin, who resided in Cortland and was 91 years old, passed away at the Guthrie Cortland Medical Center on December 2, 2022. Richard Martin was born in Manchester, New York, in Ontario County, on May 1, 1931. His parents, the late Frederick Martin and Minnie (DeSchepper) Martin, were his parents. He was an ambitious and hard-working guy who lived his life in a calm and dignified manner, devoted to his family, and always putting the needs of others before his own. He was dedicated to the idea that family comes first. He was a member of the United States Navy and saw service in Korea as well as Japan.
Richard was extremely proud of his time spent in the Seabees, which are members of the illustrious Naval Construction Battalions and operate under the motto “We Build, We Fight.” The Batallion takes great satisfaction in its capacity to both fight and develop all of the essential infrastructure at the same time. Richard will look back on his time spent in the Seabees as one of the proudest moments of his life. The knowledge and experience he gained in the Navy, both technically and in terms of his abilities as a leader, served as the foundation for his future success. After serving in the military for a period of time, Richard returned to Cortland, where he had grown up, and married the woman who would become the love of his life, Marian “Veronica” Natoli.
He was not only in the process of beginning to build a wonderful life for himself, but he was also in the process of establishing a lovely home for his family, a home that he had up until the time of his passing. Richard took great pleasure in taking care of the house, particularly the landscaping and the other aspects of the property that were located outside. He was a selfless parent and husband, and he always made time to offer his time and abilities for the benefit of his relatives, friends, and neighbors. He was involved in the community. Richard built a successful career as a Union Electrician and was a proud brother of IBEW #43 out of Syracuse. His craftsmanship, affability, and dry sense of humor made him popular among his coworkers.
Richard was a proud member of IBEW #43 out of Syracuse. During his free time, some of his favorite activities included going on vacation with his family, watching baseball and NASCAR, and rooting for the New York Mets. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Veronica; his sons John Frederick (Teresa) Martin, Joseph Richard Martin, and Thomas Christopher Martin; and his sisters Dolores Kommer and Eileen Clements, as well as his brother-in-law, James Clements; along with a large number of nieces and nephews. John Frederick Martin passed away on April 15, 2019. Veronica is his surviving spouse.
His sons John Frederick (Teresa) A Christian burial service, known as a Mass, will be held at St. Anthony’s Church in Cortland on Friday at 10:30 in the morning. After the funeral, the burial will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The family would appreciate it if you could send flowers in lieu of donations.
