Walter Genuario Death, Obituary – Union Leader Walter Vincent Genuario of West Caldwell, who served as the ATH Chair and Vice Principal at Newark Schools, passed away in a calm manner on December 13, 2022. Walter was born in Newark, New Jersey, on November 16, 1946, but he relocated to West Caldwell, New Jersey, in 1972, and remained there for the remainder of his life. Throughout his whole tenure, he was an exemplary employee at the Newark Public Schools. In 1968, Walter accepted a position as a math instructor at Southside (Shabazz) High School. While there, he collaborated with John Ransom to develop the school’s marching band into a nationally recognized program.
Within Southside, there existed a program that was referred to as “School Within a School,” and Walter became an integral component of it in the program’s second year of operation. This program eventually became University High School, where he began his career as a math teacher and eventually became the chairperson of the mathematics department. Within the Newark Public Schools, Walter was promoted to the position of Vice Principal in the year 1988. Later on, he would become a member of the teaching staff at Mount Vernon Elementary School, where he would continue to serve as vice principal until the end of his career. Walter carried on his father’s legacy of intense activity within the community’s many unions, much like his father did before him.
He served as the Executive Secretary Treasurer of the Essex-West Hudson Central Labor Council and as the Vice President of the City Association of Supervisors and Administrators (CASA) Local 20. He is survived by his brother Dennis Genuario, who is married to Edith, his niece Toni Eugenie, his aunt Edith Gaeta, who is married to Freddie, his goddaughter Carrieann DeVito, who is married to John, and a large number of loved cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, colleagues, and all of Newark’s children. Anthony and Anna Genuario, Walter’s parents, both passed away before their son was born.
